SUMMER DANCE APPLICANTS should only submit an application if you have already auditioned for the program and have been told to apply or you will be submitting a video.
International applicants do NOT use this application (you are considered an international applicant if you are not a Permanent Resident or hold dual citizenship). You may download an application from our website at the following link: http://www.ncarts.edu/admissions/app/undergrad_final.pdf.
All applicants to the FALL 2008 PROGRAMS are required to audition and/or interview with arts faculty. Please read the application instructions and departmental guidelines carefully as information varies by department.

Required Documents
North Carolina School of the Arts requires all applicants to complete and submit the following documents with their application:
- Provision of your Social Security Number
- Mandatory Information Form
- Admissions Recommendation Forms
Application Instructions
You are responsible for completing, collecting and submitting all of the required documents to the Office of Admissions.
- When you submit your application online print 2 copies of the application signature page.
- Sign the Application Agreement Statement (printed after you submit the online application) and mail the statement to the Office of Admissions as soon as possible after submitting your application. If you did not pay by credit card mail your $60 nonrefundable application fee (U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents or applicants with dual citizenship) along with the Application Agreement Statement. Checks or money orders should be made payable to NCSA.
Transcript Instructions
Applicants applying to the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music or College Arts Diploma program must supply the following:
- Official high school transcript with a list of current high school studies through the date of the application. Your high school guidance counselor will be able to provide an official copy. After completing the school year you will need to have your guidance counselor send a final transcript to the Office of Admissions.
- If course work has been completed at institutions outside of the U.S., official transcripts must be submitted and a notarized or certified English translation provided of all course work. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
- Official SAT (CEEB code 5512) or ACT (College Code 3133) score.
(All public universities in North Carolina require scores for the writing section of the SAT or ACT. The writing section of the test is included with the SAT, but if you are taking the ACT you must make sure to register for the "ACT Plus Writing”.)
- Official AP or IB score reports if you take the exams.
- If dual enrolled in any college while in high school you should have an official copy of the transcript mailed directly to the Office of Admissions from the college or university you are attending.
- If home schooled, titles and course descriptions in each year of home-schooling, tests used and evaluation of knowledge that the applicant has completed the equivalent of the University of North Carolina’s Minimum Course Requirements.
- If home schooled, proof of graduation from home school.
Transfer applicants applying to the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music or College Arts Diploma program must supply the following:
- Official high school transcript sealed or notarized.
- SAT or ACT score (sometimes included on the high school transcript)
(All public universities in North Carolina require scores for the writing section of the SAT or ACT. The writing section of the test is included with the SAT, but if you are taking the ACT you must make sure to register for the "ACT Plus Writing”.)
- Official transcript from the registrar of each institution attended.
- If course work has been completed at institutions outside of the U.S., official transcripts must be submitted and a notarized or certified English translation provided of all course work. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
- If your name has changed since you were enrolled please indicate on the application for admission the name that will appear on the transcript.
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA program applicants must supply the following:
- Applicants to Grades 8 through 10
Official transcript from each school attended with a validation seal or original signature of a school official or registrar.
- Entering 8th Grade: transcript from 5th, 6th & 7th grade
- Entering 9th Grade: transcript from 6th, 7th & 8th grade
- Entering 10th Grade: transcript from 7th, 8th & 9th grade
- Transcript must include courses in which the student is enrolled at the time of application.
- Standardized test scores, including state and national testing, since grade 6 must be included for entering 8th, 9th, and 10th grade applicants if not reported on the high school transcript.
- Applicants to Grades 11 through 12
Official transcript from each school attended with a validation seal or original signature of a school official or registrar.
- Entering 11th grade: transcript from 8th, 9th and 10th grades.
- Entering 12th grade: transcript from 9th, 10th and 11th grades.
- Transcripts must include the courses in which the student is enrolled at the time of application.
- For 12th grade applicants, official SAT or ACT score if taken (do not send the student copy). All public universities in North Carolina require scores for the writing section of the SAT or ACT. The writing section of the test is included with the SAT, but if you are taking the ACT you must make sure to register for the "ACT Plus Writing”.
- Standardized test scores, including state and national testing, since grade 7 must be included for entering 11th and 12th grade applicants if not reported on the high school transcript.
- Home-Schooled Applicants
Official transcripts from each traditional school attended with a validation seal or original signature of a school official.
- Titles and descriptions (including topics) of courses completed in each year of home schooling.
- A course-by-course listing of credits earned and tests used.
- Documentation verifying mastery of coursework.
- Attendance records.
- Results of nationally recognized standardized achievement tests taken.
- Verification of home school’s continuing compliance with state law.
- An expository (not creative) writing sample.
- If course work has been completed at institutions outside of the U.S., official transcripts must be submitted and a notarized or certified English translation provided of all course work. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
Recommendation Letters
- All applicants supply two (2) letters of recommendation.
- Recommendation forms are provided.
- Evaluators may provide additional comments in a separate letter.
- One letter should come from an arts instructor.
- One letter should come from an academic instructor (if no longer enrolled in college, a letter of recommendation may come from an employer).
- Visual Arts high school applicants may supply a third letter of recommendation from an arts or academic instructor. A third letter is optional, but may help to supplement and complete the applicant file.
Resume
- Each applicant provides a resume detailing artistic experience and educational objectives.
- In addition to the above, School of Dance applicants must include on their resume the name of dance instructors, their addresses, dates of study and number of hours per week of study.
- In addition to the above, School of Music applicants must include on their resume the names of private teachers, their addresses and number of years of study with each instructor.
- In addition to the above, School of Drama applicants must include on their resume artistic experience, educational objectives and include a list of plays performed giving the name of the role and the date and place of performance.
Statement of Purpose or Writing Sample
- Dance applicants are not required to submit a writing sample.
- Music applicants are not required to submit writing samples.
- Drama applicants to the third-year Directing Program must submit a short essay detailing why the applicant wishes to pursue a directing career and what the candidate intends to accomplish in directing.
- Drama applicants to the Professional Actor Training Program are not required to submit a writing sample.
- Filmmaking applicants to the undergraduate program must submit a typed writing sample (10 pages or less) displaying the applicant’s creative writing skills. The sample may be scenes from a screenplay, a stage play, a short story, or an excerpt from a longer prose fiction piece. No essays or other analytical work.
- Filmmaking applicants must also supply a Statement of Intent no longer than one page in length stating why they would like to attend the North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking.
International Applicants (applicants who do not hold permanent residency or dual citizenship)
Application
- Complete a paper application or download an application from the following link: http://www.ncarts.edu/admissions/app/undergrad_final.pdf.
- Submit with the application a nonrefundable application fee of $110 payable in U.S. dollars. Checks or money orders should be made payable to NCSA.
Transcripts
- Course work completed at institutions outside of the U.S. must be submitted with a notarized or certified English translation. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
- Submit an official translation in English of courses in which the applicant is enrolled at the time of application.
Test Scores
- An official TOEFL score is required of all international applicants to the undergraduate program for whom English is not the first language.
- The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) and 213 (computer- based). The internet based test is evaluated on an individual basis.
- A SLEP test is required for all international applicants to the high school program for whom English is not the first language. The required minimum score is 55.
Resume
- Each applicant provides a resume detailing artistic experience and educational objectives
- In addition to the above, School of Dance applicants must include on their resume the name of dance instructors, their addresses, dates of study and number of hours per week of study.
- In addition to the above, School of Music applicants must include on their resume the names of private teachers, their addresses and number of years of study with each instructor.

Other Documents
- If your citizenship is other than U.S. and you have Permanent Resident status, a copy of both sides of your green card (I-551) should accompany the application.
- A copy of your current passport.
- If you hold a visa and/or I-20 provide a copy along with application materials.
- Verification of sufficient funds to cover the first year of enrollment or affidavit of support from a bank or sponsor is required.
Financial Aid
Candidates who wish to apply for financial aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit it to the Federal Student Aid Program. The priority filing date for the North Carolina School of the Arts is March 1, 2008. Therefore, you are encouraged to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, 2008 to allow time for the processing of your application. The results of your FAFSA will be used to determine your demonstrated financial need. For more information on the financial aid application and awarding process contact the Financial Aid Office.

High School Transcripts



Some North Carolina public high schools have the capability to electronically send official high school transcripts when you apply online. We encourage you to visit your school counselor to verify coursework and grades prior to requesting an electronic transcript.
To send an electronic transcript, you must:
- Complete this online application.
- Make sure you have entered the following information in your profile and/or application:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- NCWise ID (Your NCWise ID is your public high school student
identifier number. Providing the NCWise ID is voluntary and if provided
will give you the opportunity to request your high school transcript
electronically)
- Gender
- Current high school
- E-mail address
- Be currently enrolled at a participating public high school in North Carolina (one that has converted from the SIMS system to NCWISE to manage student data). If you are not sure about your school, check with your school counselor or office staff.
If these conditions were met when you submitted your application, you will then be presented with the option of sending your high school transcript electronically to that school.
