Create Your UNC Portal
To create your UNC Portal, go to our Website at www.admissions.unc.edu and complete your profile. You’ll receive a confidential username and password. To apply online, log into your UNC Portal and follow the simple online directions. Be sure to check your UNC Portal often for important messages about your application.
$70 Application Fee
We require a nonrefundable application fee of $70. You may pay the fee by check or money order. Your check or money order should be payable to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; it must clearly indicate your full legal name, your date of birth, and the confirmation number that you receive after submitting this online application. If you cannot afford the fee, please submit a College Board Fee Waiver Form or a fee-waiver request signed by your high school counselor. Please do not send cash; we regret that we cannot accept it.
Official SAT or ACT Scores
We require that you take either the SAT Reasoning Test (with writing) or the ACT (with writing) and have an official score report sent directly to us by the testing service. You should take the exam by November for Early Notification and December for Regular Notification. If you have taken any SAT Subject Test exams, we recommend you provide these scores as well. When you register for a test, make sure you ask that your score be sent to UNC Chapel Hill:
- SAT code is 5816 - ACT code is 3162
If you have already taken a test and did not list UNC Chapel Hill, call the appropriate testing service and ask that your scores be sent to us. For SAT Reasoning Test scores, call (866) 756-7346 or visit www.collegeboard.com; for ACT scores, call (319) 337-1313 or visit www.act.org. Because the testing service sends us scores electronically, you do not need to pay for expedited mail delivery.
Essays
We require one long essay and one short essay. Read the topics carefully, pay close attention to the required lengths, and follow the instructions in the online application for uploading the essays from your local disk. Please include your full legal name and your date of birth at the top of each sheet. Your essays are very important and will not only be evaluated for admission, but also for possible selection for the Honors Program and merit-based scholarships.
Coursework taken at a College/University
High School seniors who have taken classes at a college/university need to send official transcripts for all colleges attended to the Admissions office.
Counselor Statement
Be sure to download the Counselor Statement, complete the applicant portion, and give the form to your guidance or college counselor to complete. If your school permits, please return the completed statement and transcript in a sealed envelope with any other application materials you may be sending. Your counselor may submit the statement and transcript in a separate envelope if that is the policy of your school.
Teacher Recommendation
Be sure to download the Teacher Recommendation Form; complete the applicant portion and give it, along with an envelope, to the teacher of your choice. Please include the form and recommendation with the rest of your application materials; alternatively, your teacher may submit your recommendation in a separate envelope if that is the policy of your school. We require only one teacher recommendation and find one letter to be sufficient. If you plan to provide more than one recommendation, we urge you to send us the additional letters in the same package. While we can confirm that we have received a letter of recommendation on your behalf, we cannot confirm the name of the teacher who submitted the recommendation.
Honor Code / Community Standards
Please answer carefully all of the questions in the Honor Code/Community Standards part of the application, Screens 3 and 13. If you overlook one or more of these questions, your application will be considered incomplete and we will contact you regarding the missing information. If you answer "yes" to any Community Standards question, an explanation is required and must be sent by mail to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, CB# 2200, Jackson Hall, UNC Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-2200. Your failure to provide complete, accurate, and truthful information on this application will be grounds to deny or withdraw your admission, or to dismiss you after enrollment.
About Your Social Security Number
You are strongly encouraged to provide your Social Security number (SSN) so that the University may more easily verify your information and process any financial aid and/or scholarship application you may submit. Submission of your SSN is voluntary, however. If you submit your SSN, the University will use it to create a unique University identifier to verify records and match documents associated with your application, enrollment, and other educational records. Please note that, if you enroll at the University, you will be required to provide your SSN in order for the University to comply with federal and state reporting requirements.
Need-based Financial Aid
Carolina admissions decisions are need-blind, which means we read your application without considering your financial need. The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid will send you general information about aid regardless of your status in the admissions process. For more information, call (919) 962-8396 or visit studentaid.unc.edu.
In order to be considered for need-based student aid, please submit the CSS/PROFILE and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1, 2010. FAFSA forms are available at www.fafsa.ed.gov; CSS/PROFILE forms are available at www.collegeboard.com. If you meet the March 1 deadline and are admitted, you will receive your aid notification in April. Please note that we will communicate with you through your UNC email account (ONYEN) regarding your financial aid. You may be asked to submit additional paperwork by the Office of Student Aid. If so, it is important that you respond promptly.
- FAFSA Title IV code: 002974
- CSS/PROFILE code: 5816
Residency Application
If you are a legal resident of North Carolina, you must answer the residency related questions on Screens 2, 3, 4, 5, 12, and 13 to be considered for in-state tuition. If you do not provide complete residency information, we will assume you are not a legal resident of North Carolina.
Scholarships and Honors
When you apply for admission, we will automatically consider you for the Honors Program and for merit-based scholarships. While all of the information you include with your application is considered for Honors and merit scholarships, we pay special attention to your essays, which are a critical part of this selection process.
Carolina is pleased to offer a variety of independent merit-based scholarships, including the Pogue, the Morehead-Cain and the Robertson Scholars Programs, all of which have separate selection processes.
- Pogue Scholarship: The Pogue Scholarship has a separate application that is due December 5, 2009 for in-state students and January 5, 2010 for out-of-state students. Students nominated by the Admissions Committee will be invited to complete a supplemental application by February 26.
- Morehead-Cain Scholars Program: The Morehead-Cain has a separate application that is due October 1. North Carolina residents attending North Carolina high schools may be nominated by their high school or self-nominate by October 1. Non-North Carolina residents who are not nominated by an official Morehead-Cain nominating school or affiliate program may be considered based on their admission material if they apply by November 2.
- Robertson Scholars Program: While all applicants to UNC-Chapel Hill are considered, those who are interested are strongly encouraged to submit a supplemental form directly to the Robertson Scholars Program by December 1 and to apply to UNCCH by mid-December.
- National Merit Scholarships: National Merit Finalists need to indicate UNC-Chapel Hill as their first choice in order to qualify. Notification of scholarship awards and honors invitations will be issued by early April. Students being considered for either the Morehead-Cain or the Robertson Scholars Programs will be notified by those offices.
Midyear Grades
We may require that you submit your midyear grades online through your UNC Portal. If we require them, we will notify you by e-mail and on your UNC Portal. Please do not ask your guidance counselor to submit your midyears on your behalf.
About Admission for Students with Disabilities
Each application for admission is considered in competition with all other applications. However, if you believe that your academic progress has been affected by disability-related issues, you may voluntarily include with your application documentation about the disability and its specific impact on your educational experiences. If you supply such documentation, we will keep it confidential and use it only as part of our voluntary efforts to comply with federal regulation 34 CFR 104.42. Your choosing to supply this information will not subject you to any discriminatory treatment. For additional information, please refer to http://www.admissions.unc.edu/Apply/More_Information.html.
Admissions Appeal
According to university policy, appeals concerning individual admissions, or admissions recission, decisions may be had only if it is contended that: (a) a provision set forth in The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Admissions Policy (“Admissions Policy”) has been violated; or (b) the decision not to admit the individual or to rescind admission resulted from a material procedural error in the admissions process. If you wish to appeal your decision, you must do so in writing to the Director of Undergraduate Admissions within 30 days after receipt of your decision letter. The complete appeals policy is available by visiting http://www.admissions.unc.edu/pdf/Admissions_Appeals_Policy.pdf.
Schedule Changes
The strength of your curriculum will be an important factor in our decision about your candidacy. If your schedule changes for any reason between the time you file your application and the time you receive your decision, you must notify us in writing immediately; if you do not, we reserve the right to reevaluate your application at a later date and to change any decision we might have made. Moreover, if your schedule changes after you have been offered admission to Carolina, we reserve the right to reevaluate your application and if necessary to revoke your admission. Admitted students who are contemplating a change in their schedule must notify us in writing before the change, indicating their proposed new schedule and their reasons for the change. We will review and respond to all requests as promptly as possible.
