The School of Dance offers a High School Diploma, Bachelor of Fine Arts and a College Arts Diploma.
Audition Requirements
PLEASE NOTE
Applicants applying to the dance program and who enroll in the
program must be able to:
- A student must demonstrate adherence to professional ethics and integrity necessary to work in a collaborative environment. He/she must demonstrate emotional stability, responsibility and ethical performance of all of his/her assigned duties in order to succeed in the program. A successful dance student must be able to recognize when he/she needs the support of professional to maintain psychological and physical health.
- A student must be able to sustain a high level of physically challenging movement
sequences for extended periods of time;
- A student must be able to execute a full range of body movements and the elements derived from dance, but not limited to, turning, jumping, balancing, falling, stretching, flexing and running while responding to musical and visual cues;
- A student must be able to view and reproduce sequences of classroom exercises and complicated choreography, which requires specific movements for the head, arms, hands, torso, legs and feet.
- A student must demonstrate the ability to work precisely with live and recorded music.
- A student must be able to respond appropriately to verbal instructions and warnings to insure the safety of the student and his/her fellow dancers.
- A student must be physically able to participate in solo, duet and group work that may include lifting and manipulating his or her own body or that of another dancer, many times above the top of one's head.
- A student must be able to communicate clearly and respectfully, both in written and verbal form, for class discussion and multiple collaborative projects.
- A student must be able to maintain a healthy, toned and energized physique, one conducive to achieving the aesthetics necessary to express the art form through his/her body.
In-person Auditions
- Auditions begin with a short class. A dance faculty member demonstrates all of the dance combinations to be executed.
- Female ballet applicants may be asked to do pointe work.
- Applicants must wear practice clothes; no particular color is required for the audition. Female applicants must wear their hair up. Do not wear jewelry.
- In addition to the above requirements, contemporary applicants must be prepared to present a self-choreographed solo, two to three minutes in length, danced to classical music. Examples of classical music composers are Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, and Copeland. Music that is not classical is unacceptable.
- The classical music you choose for the audition solo must be on a compact disc and cued appropriately.
DVD Audition Requirements
- All DVDs must be received no later than Friday, April 16, 2010 by the Office of Admissions. DVDs must be compatible with United States equipment. Applicants must wear practice clothes; no particular color leotard required.
Ballet applicants must include the following steps on their DVD:
- At the barre plié, port de bras, tendu, tendu jeté, rond de jambre par terre, frappé, fondu, rond de jambe en l'air de côté, développé, grand battement
- In the center battement tendu with épaulement, pirouette, petite allegro, and grand allegro
- A solo of classical variation.
Women must present their solo on pointe. Ballet solos should be one to two minutes in length.
Contemporary applicants must include a short technical demonstration at the barre or center and include:
- Pliés, tendues/dégagés (straight and with plié from fifth), rond de jambe, passé développés (front, side, back), grande battement, and a balance on one leg.
Movements should be short, but should demonstrate clarity of form and should not exceed five minutes.
- In addition, a two to three minute self-choreographed solo must be performed to classical music. Examples of classical music composers are Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, and Copeland.
Audition Details
The following is a complete listing of the School of Dance auditions for the summer and fall programs. If you wish to be considered for admission, you must audition either in person on one of the following dates, or submit a DVD audition to be received no later than April 16, 2010 to be considered for the academic year. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts reserves the right to cancel and reschedule auditions, or make other arrangements with the applicant.

Regional Auditions
Each year, the School of Dance conducts numerous auditions throughout the country in January and February. Locations and dates will be available after November 1, 2009. Applicants should check the School of Dance website at www.uncsa.edu.
