First Time Freshman (College Arts Diploma Program)

Minimum Course Requirements
The Arts Diploma program is a 4-year college level program designed to allow students who choose not to pursue a degree at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts to take arts courses only. These students often include those who have previously completed a baccalaureate degree at another institution. Students with weak academic backgrounds or test scores may also initially be offered admission to the Arts Diploma program. Upon demonstration of sufficient success in the Undergraduate Academic Program, these students may apply for admission to the degree program.

**Note: School of Filmmaking does not offer an Arts Diploma Program. Students with weak academic backgrounds or test scores will not be considered for the Arts Diploma.

Transcripts
An official copy of your high school transcript which includes course names and scores for grades 9 through 12 is required. Courses in which you are currently enrolled should be included on the transcript.

Home schooled applicants must provide the following: titles and course descriptions in each year of home schooling, tests used and evaluation of knowledge that applicants has completed the equivalent of the University of North Carolina’s Minimum Course Requirements.

Letters of recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required. One letter should come from arts instructor and another should come from an academic instructor.

Resume
A resume detailing artistic experience and educational objectives should be submitted along with the application by all applicants. The following programs require additional information on the resume:

  • School of Dance applicants must also include the name of dance instructors dates of study and number of hours per week of study.
  • School of Drama applicants must also include a list of plays performed, name of the role, and date and place of performance.
  • School of Music applicants must include the names of private teachers and number of years of study with each.

Mandatory Information Form
All applicants are required to submit a Mandatory Information Form. Complete the top portion of the form and give it to your guidance counselor to complete.

If you are home schooled please have someone other than a parent complete the form. The individual should have known you for a year or more.

Social Security Number
Provision of your social security number is voluntary; however, it is requested by the institution to assist with processing of your application by allowing us to match your transcripts, financial aid forms and test scores with your file. Your social security number will not be used as your student identification number and will only be used in accordance with state and federal laws. You will be issued a campus wide identification number (CWID) to serve as a mean of identification.

Additional Requirements
All programs require the above information. However, some programs require additional documentation to complete the application process. Please see the details below for the additional requirements.

  • School of Dance -- 2 5x7 photographs with name on back, in color or black and white as follows:
    • 5x7 photo faxing front, pointe tendue in second with arms in second (required of all applicants)
    • 5x7 photo in first or second arabesque – required of all female ballet applicants
    • 5x7 photo in first or second arabesque – required of all male ballet applicants
    • 5x7 photo in a contemporary position – required of all contemporary dance applicants

  • School of Drama
    • 8X10 headshot or a recent photo either in color or black and white with name printed on the back of photo
    • Directing Program applicants (for undergraduate juniors only) must submit a short essay detailing why they wish to pursue a directing career and what they hope to accomplish in directing.
