Thank you for your interest in the North Carolina School of the Arts. The Office of Admissions looks forward to working with you during the application process for the Fall of 2009.
International applicants do NOT use this application (you are considered an international applicant if you are not a Permanent Resident or hold dual citizenship). You may download an application from our website at the following link: http://www.ncarts.edu/admissions/app/undergrad_final.pdf.
All applicants to the FALL 2009 PROGRAMS are required to audition and/or interview with arts faculty. Please read the application instructions and departmental guidelines carefully as information varies by department.

Application
- Please fill out the application as thoroughly as possible.
- You can log in later and resume your application or make changes by clicking the 'Save' button.
- Your failure to provide complete, accurate, and truthful information on this application will be grounds to deny or withdraw your admission, or dismiss you after enrollment.
- When you are finished, click the 'SUBMIT' button on the left column of any application screen.
- Print the application agreement statement that appears after you submit the application.
- Mail the signed agreement statement to the Office of Admissions, 1533 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127
- If you did not pay by credit card, please send the application agreement statement along with your $60 application fee (U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents) or $110 (international applicants) or fee waiver to Office of Admissions, 1533 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127
- You cannot make changes to your application after it has been submitted.
- If you are applying to 2 different arts departments, you must complete another application
Application Fee
- A nonrefundable application fee is required. If you did not pay by credit card, you should attach a check or money order to the printed application agreement statement.
- Checks or money orders should be made payable to UNCSA (University of North Carolina School of the Arts).
- We also accept Waiver Request forms. Request forms can be obtained from your high school counselor.
- Wire transfers may be accepted only from Canada, England, France, Germany and Switzerland. Wiring Instruction
Required Documents
You are responsible for completing, collecting and submitting all of the required documents to the Office of Admissions, 1533 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
University of North Carolina School of the Arts requires in addition to the required documentation all applicants to complete and submit the following documents:
- Mandatory Information Form
- Admissions Recommendation Forms
Applicants will not be considered for admission until these and all other documents are on file. Transcripts
Freshman applicants to the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music or College Arts Diploma must supply the following:
- Official high school transcript with a list of current high school studies through the date of the application.
- Your high school guidance counselor will be able to provide a signed/sealed or notarized copy of your transcript.
Note: The School of Filmmaking requires a GPA of 3.0.
- After finishing the school year you will need to have your guidance counselor send a signed/sealed or notarized final transcript to the Office of Admissions.
- If course work has been completed at institutions outside of the U.S., official transcripts must be submitted and a notarized or certified English translation provided of all course work. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
- Official SAT (CEEB code 5512) or ACT (College Code 3133) score.
Note: The School of Filmmaking requires a verbal score of 530 and a math score of 520 or combined score of verbal and math of 1100 and/or an ACT score of 22 or higher.
- Official AP or IB score reports if you take the exams.
- If dual enrolled in any college while in high school you should have an official copy of the transcript mailed directly to the Office of Admissions from the college or university you are attending.
- If home schooled, titles and course descriptions in each year of home-schooling, tests used and evaluation of knowledge that the applicant has completed the equivalent of the University of North Carolina’s Minimum Course Requirements.
- Official documentation of home school operation by the State in which you were home schooled.
- If home schooled, proof of graduation from home school.
Transfer applicants applying to the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music or College Arts Diploma program must supply the following:
- Sealed or notarized official high school transcript.
- SAT and/or ACT score.
Note: The School of Filmmaking requires a GPA of 3.0; a SAT verbal score of 530 and a math score of 520 or combined score of verbal and math of 1100 and/or an ACT score of 22 or higher.
- Sealed, signed or notarized official transcript from the registrar of each institution attended.
- If course work has been completed at institutions outside of the U.S., official transcripts must be submitted and a notarized or certified English translation provided of all course work. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
- If your name has changed since you were enrolled please indicate the name that will appear on the transcript on the application for admission.
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA APPLICANTS
- Applicants to Grades 8 through 10
Official transcript or report card from each school attended with a validation seal or original signature of a school official or registrar.
- Entering 8th Grade: transcript from 5th, 6th & 7th grade
- Entering 9th Grade: transcript from 6th, 7th & 8th grade
- Entering 10th Grade: transcript from 7th, 8th & 9th grade
- Transcript must include courses in which the student is enrolled at the time of application.
- Standardized test scores, including state and national testing, since grade 6 must be included for entering 8th, 9th, and 10th grade applicants if not reported on the high school transcript. If no standardized tests have been taken have the guidance counselor indicate this on the transcript or report card.
- Applicants to Grades 11 through 12
Official transcript or report card from each school attended with a validation seal or original signature of a school official or registrar.
- Entering 11th grade: transcript from 8th, 9th and 10th grades.
- Entering 12th grade: transcript from 9th, 10th and 11th grades.
- Transcripts must include the courses in which the student is enrolled at the time of application.
- For 12th grade applicants, official SAT or ACT score if taken (do not send the student copy).
- Standardized test scores, including state and national testing, since grade 7 must be included for entering 11th and 12th grade applicants if not reported on the high school transcript. If no standardized tests have been taken have the guidance counselor indicate this on the transcript or report card.
- Home-Schooled Applicants
Official transcripts from each traditional school attended with a validation seal or original signature of a school official.
- Titles and descriptions (including topics) of courses completed in each year of home schooling.
- A course-by-course listing of credits earned and tests used.
- Documentation verifying mastery of coursework.
- Attendance records.
- Results of nationally recognized standardized achievement tests taken.
- Verification of home school’s continuing compliance with state law.
- An expository (not creative) writing sample.
- If course work has been completed at institutions outside of the U.S., official transcripts must be submitted and a notarized or certified English translation provided of all course work. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
Recommendation Letters
- All applicants (BFA, BM, Arts Diploma and High School Program) must supply two (2) letters of recommendation.
- Recommendation forms are provided.
- Evaluators may provide additional comments in a separate letter of attachment.
- One letter should come from an arts instructor.
- One letter should come from an academic instructor (if no longer enrolled in college, a letter of recommendation may come from an employer).
- Visual Arts high school applicants may supply a third letter of recommendation from an arts or academic instructor. A third letter is optional, but may help to supplement and complete the applicant file.
Resume
- Applicants to the BFA, BM, Arts Diploma Program or High School Program provide a resume detailing artistic experience and educational objectives.
- In addition to the above, School of Dance applicants must include on their resume the name of dance instructors, their addresses, dates of study and number of hours per week of study.
- In addition to the above, School of Music applicants must include on their resume the names of private teachers, their addresses and number of years of study with each instructor.
Statement of Purpose or Writing Sample
- School of Design and Production applicants must have a statement expressing interests, goals and other information giving insight into their work.
- School of Dance, School of Drama, School of Filmmaking and School of Music applicants do not submit a writing sample.
International Applicants (applicants who do not hold permanent residency or dual citizenship)
Application

- Submit with the application a nonrefundable application fee of $110 payable in U.S. dollars. Checks or money orders should be made payable to UNCSA. Wire transfers are only accepted from Canada, England, France, Germany and Switzerland.

Transcripts
- Course work completed at institutions outside of the U.S. must be submitted with a notarized or certified English translation. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
- Submit an official translation in English of courses in which the applicant is enrolled at the time of application.
Test Scores
- An official TOEFL score is required of all international applicants to the BFA, BM or Arts Diploma for whom English is not the first language.
- The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) and 213 (computer-based). The internet based test is evaluated on an individual basis.
- An official SLEP score is required of all international applicants to the High School program for whom English is not the first Language.
- The required minimum SLEP is 55.
Resume
- Each applicant provides a resume detailing artistic experience and educational objectives
- In addition to the above, School of Dance applicants must include on their resume the name of dance instructors, their addresses, dates of study and number of hours per week of study.
- In addition to the above, School of Music applicants must include on their resume the names of private teachers, their addresses and number of years of study with each instructor.
Other Documents
- If you are a Permanent Resident status, a copy of both sides of your paperwork should accompany the application or the application agreement statement.
- A copy of your current passport.
- If you hold a visa and/or I-20 provide a copy along with application materials.
- Verification of sufficient funds to cover the first year of enrollment or affidavit of support from a bank or sponsor is required.
Financial Aid
Candidates who wish to apply for financial aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit it to the Federal Student Aid Program. The priority filing date for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts is March 1, 2009. Therefore, you are encouraged to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, 2009 to allow time for the processing of your application. The results of your FAFSA will be used to determine your demonstrated financial need. For more information on the financial aid application and awarding process contact the Financial Aid Office.

High School Transcripts



Some North Carolina public high schools have the capability to electronically send official high school transcripts when you apply online. We encourage you to visit your school counselor to verify coursework and grades prior to requesting an electronic transcript.
To send an electronic transcript, you must:
- Complete this online application.
- Make sure you have entered the following information in your profile and/or application:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- NCWise ID (Your NCWise ID is your public high school student
identifier number. Providing the NCWise ID is voluntary and if provided
will give you the opportunity to request your high school transcript
electronically)
- Gender
- Current high school
- E-mail address
- Be currently enrolled at a participating public high school in North Carolina (one that has converted from the SIMS system to NCWISE to manage student data). If you are not sure about your school, check with your school counselor or office staff.
If these conditions were met when you submitted your application, you will then be presented with the option of sending your high school transcript electronically to that school.
