It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Winston Salem State University. WSSU is a multi-hub, comprehensive institution offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. This university presents distinctive opportunities and exceptional academic programs for prospective, entering and returning graduate students. The School of Graduate Studies and Research works collaboratively with the Faculty Senate Graduate Council and academic departments to develop, maintain, and administer policies and procedures for all graduate programs. The university currently offers career-oriented graduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Economics, the School of Education and Human Performance, and the School of Health Sciences. There are programs for licensure or master’s degrees in the areas of:

Application Instructions
After reading the instructions, please complete the online application as thoroughly as possible. Your failure to provide complete, accurate, and truthful information on this application will be grounds to deny or withdraw your admission, or dismiss you after enrollment. When you are finished, click the 'SUBMIT' button on the left column of any application screen. Print the application agreement statement that appears after you submit the application. Return the printed application agreement statement with a nonrefundable fee of $50 to the address below.
For admission consideration to a graduate degree program, the applicant must submit the following:
General Admissions Requirements for all applicants:
- A completed application agreement statement
- A $50 nonrefundable application processing fee
- Two (2) sets of official transcripts in sealed envelopes from each college and university previously attended with the exception of previously enrolled, currently enrolled or graduates of Winston-Salem State University.
- Three (3)
letters of recommendations from former professors, current employers, or persons well acquainted with the applicant's academic potential. Please refer to the admissions requirements for the chosen degree program regarding additional recommendation requirements.
- Any other specific documents required from the chosen degree program
Additional Requirements for International Applicants:
- International applicants whose native language is not English and those who earned their undergraduate degrees from institutions outside of the United States, which do not use English as the medium of instruction, must submit the following additional documents:
- Results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum score required for admission is 550 (written) or 213 (computer) OR International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum score required for admission is 6.5. Only official test scores received directly from the testing service will be considered valid.
- Financial Certification (Graduate Students $20,000 subject to change without prior notification)
- Sponsors Affidavit
- Intent to Enroll Form
- Transcripts: Two Official transcripts or documents with official seals as evidence of college work completed are required. Such documents must indicate that the minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent has been awarded by an accredited college or university. If transcripts are obtained from a university outside of the United States, and are in a language other than English, the transcripts must be evaluated by an International Education Evaluation Service. While not excluding others, we have found evaluations by the following agents acceptable:

Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology (MCST) Admission Requirements:
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores — General exam
- A written personal statement (essay describing professional goals, experience, and research interests)
- Resume reflecting work experience
- Documentation of prior learning which satisfies program pre-requisite knowledge (in lieu of pre-requisite courses — for applicants who do not hold the BS in computer science)
Master of Business Administration (MBA) Admission Requirements:
- Official report of Graduate Management Admission Test® scores
- Admissions essay – “Why I want an MBA and why I want to obtain it from WSSU.” Please also indicate in your essay the reasons why you believe that you will be successful in the MBA program
- Resume
- Current Resume highlighting professional work experience
Master of Education in Elementary Education (M.Ed.) Admission Requirements:
- A North Carolina "A" License in Elementary Education, the equivalent from another state, or a temporary lateral entry license for employment in an elementary school setting
- A minimum of two years of teaching experience in an elementary classroom
- An undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or better
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores — General Test or the Miller Analogies Test scores
- A satisfactory written statement of purpose
Recommendations must be from 3 professional educators
Master of Education in Elementary Education Distance Learning (M.Ed.-DL) Admission Requirements:
- A North Carolina “A” License in Elementary Education, the equivalent from another state, or a temporary lateral entry license for employment in an elementary school setting
- A minimum of two years of teaching experience in an elementary classroom
- An undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or better
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores – General Test or the Miller Analogies Test scores
- A satisfactory written statement of purpose
Recommendations must be from 3 professional educators
Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC) Admission Requirements:
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores — General Test
- An undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or better
- An interview with graduate faculty in the Rehabilitation Counseling program
Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling Distance Learning (MRC-DL) Admission Requirements:
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores – General Test
- An undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or better
- An interview with graduate faculty in the Rehabilitation Counseling program
- 3 years of related work experience
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Admission Requirements:
- A baccalaureate degree with an upper division in nursing from a program accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting body
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores — General Test or the Miller Analogies Test scores
- Brief professional resume
- Copy of North Carolina or Compact State License
- At least one year of clinical experience as a registered nurse
- Undergraduate courses in statistics, health assessment, and research
- An undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or greater
Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) Admission Requirements:
- A cumulative GPA of 3.00
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores — General Test
- Minimum of 40 hours volunteer or work experience in the field of occupational therapy
- Three (3) completed recommendation forms. One (1) recommendation must be completed by the occupational therapy supervisor where student volunteered or worked
- A written essay (assigned topic is listed in application packet)

Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) Admission Requirements:
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores - General Test
- Complete a minimum of 50 total observation hours in two physical therapy settings
- Demonstrate computer literacy, including the ability to use word processing, databases, and the internet
- Complete a biographical sketch

Master of Arts in English as a Second Language in Applied Linguistics (MA) Admission Requirements:
- Individuals who hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and a current teaching license in any area may enroll in the program to become NC certified ESL K-12 teachers. Individuals who do not wish to become certified can also enroll in the program.
- Candidates must show evidence of having studied a foreign language at the college level. The ESL Program Coordinator will evaluate all previous transcripts.
- Non-native speakers of English must submit official score reports for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum score for admission is 550 for TOEFL (paper-based), 213 for TOEFL (computer-based), or 6.5 for IELTS.
Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) Admission Requirements:
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores – General Test
- Admissions essay – “Why I want an MHA and why I want to obtain it from WSSU.” Please also indicate in your essay the reasons why you believe that you will be successful in the MHA program
- Current Resume highlighting professional work experience
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Admission Requirements:
- A non-teaching bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with an undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 or better.
- Three professional references qualified to validate your professional experiences (principals, teachers, employers, supervisors, etc.)
- Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores – General Test (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores
- A contractual teaching position in the area of licensure in a state accredited school.
