Salem College

2010-2011 APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
Welcome to the Salem College Online Application
A message from the campus:

Salem's admission process is designed to enroll highly motivated students with strong academic ability who can benefit from and contribute to the College community.  The Admissions Committee considers each application individually.  We base each admission decision on a number of factors:  academic achievement, extracurricular activities, individual talents, and community service, among others.

Although we do not require a personal interview for admission, we would like to meet you.  We encourage you to visit the Salem campus, meet with a staff member in our Office of Admissions, talk with our professors and students, sample a class, and tour the campus.  As we get to know more about you, we hope you will become better acquainted with Salem.

Thank you and we look forward to working with you through the admissions process.

  1. Each admitted student will receive a $10,000 honor award, renewable annually for each full year at the college. These students may be eligible to compete to increase the amounts of their scholarships during scholarship weekend. Please contact the Admissions Office for a list of available scholarships.
  2. Successful students will be afforded honors opportunities within the Salem curriculum.
  3. Students applying for early notification with distinction need not commit to the program until May 1.

If you wish to transfer to Salem from another college or university, you should meet the general freshman entrance requirements. In addition to those credentials, you must submit:
  1. An official transcript from each college attended
  2. A catalog from each college previously attended with completed courses clearly marked
  3. A statement of good standing from the dean of students of each college previously attended
Transfer applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) for all previous college work.

International Admission

Each year international students seek admission to Salem College. Students seeking admission should submit the following documents:
  1. Secondary school records with an English translation
  2. Exam results if student took GCE's, Ordinary Levels, Advanced Levels or International Baccalaureate
  3. TOEFL results (score must be at least 500)
Any student who has university credit from an international university must also submit a copy of her university transcript complete with an evaluation credit from World Education Services, Inc. World Education Services, Inc. can be reached at PO Box 745, Old Chelsea Station, New York, New York 10113-0745.

Salem College will not review international transcripts or award credit without an evaluation from WES. All credits accepted by Salem College as a result of the WES evaluation will be given grades of "Pass."

Some financial aid is available for international students. However, the college is unable to provide full scholarships.

Application Deadlines

Although there is no formal admission deadline, we encourage you to apply early in the fall of your senior year. Within three weeks of receiving your completed credentials, Salem will inform you of a decision.

Since you must first be admitted to the college before we can consider your application for financial aid, we strongly encourage you to apply by February 1. Admitted students who complete their financial aid applications by March 1 receive priority in funding.

High School Transcripts

Some North Carolina public high schools have the capability to electronically send official high school transcripts when you apply online. We encourage you to visit your school counselor to verify coursework and grades prior to requesting an electronic transcript.

To send an electronic transcript, you must:

  • Complete this online application.
  • Make sure you have entered the following information in your profile and/or application:
    • First and Last name - This must match your NCWISE name (use the name that appears on your report card, or check with your high school counselor).
    • NCWISE Student ID - Your NCWISE Student ID is your public high school student identifier number and can be found on your report card. Providing the NCWISE Student ID is voluntary and will give you the opportunity to request your high school transcript electronically.
    • Current high school (or high school at time of graduation)
    • Date of birth
    • E-mail address
    • Gender
  • Be currently enrolled, or enrolled at the time of graduation, at a participating public high school in North Carolina that has converted from the SIMS system to NCWISE to manage student data. If you are not sure about your school's current status, or status at the time you graduated, check with your school counselor or office staff.
If these conditions were met when you submitted your application, you will then be presented with the option of sending your high school transcript electronically to that school.
